The first Long Valley Public School was started about the time the private school stopped. It was a long hall-like building and a kitchen was added onto the end of it. The John family lived too far away from the school to travel every day, so the John children and the teacher, Miss Woodward, lived in the kitchen during the week. The building was about ¼ mile down from where the Dow road takes off, and on the south side of the road. School was held there for almost 20 years. The schoolhouse building was finally moved to the Dow residence.
When school stopped in the Dow ranch building, the children went to a new one built at the upper end of the valley by John R. Garner, which was between the road and the creek at the Garner residence. This was the last school in the valley and ran until about 1934. After the school ceased, John R. Garner added a steeple and a bell and changed it over to a church. Later, the building then became a grainery for the Garner ranch. Bertha Woodard Rust taught at the last school about 1896.
The Long Valley School District was formed in 1913, and the school opened and closed several times. The last time it was open was from 1927 to 1934. This school was one of the few one-room schools to teach 9th grade, the beginning of High School classes.
